High frequency un-mixing of soil samples using a submerged spectrophotometer in a laboratory setting—implications for sediment fingerprinting

Abstract Purpose This study tests the feasibility of using a submersible spectrophotometer as novel method to trace and apportion suspended sediment sources in situ at high temporal frequency. Methods Laboratory experiments were designed identify how absorbance different wavelengths can be used un-mix artificial mixtures soil samples (i.e. sources). The experiment consists tank containing 40 L water, which known proportions added suspension. Absorbance measurements made elucidate: (i) effects concentrations on absorbance, (ii) relationship between particle size (iii) linear additivity prerequisite for un-mixing. Results observed relationships sample ultraviolet visible (UV–VIS) wavelength range (200–730 nm) indicated that differences patterns are caused by soil-specific properties size. was found linearly additive could predict MixSIAR Bayesian tracer mixing model. Model results indicate dominant contributions two three predicted well, whilst accuracy four-soil lower (with respective mean absolute errors 15.4%, 12.9% 17.0%).
